“The next day he [John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming to him and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29). This is such a simple phrase but the enormity of it is staggering.

Romans 5:12-14 tells us that Adam’s one sin was so corrupting that all his offspring was corrupted and doomed to have a nature that rebels against God. Since God is perfect, He cannot allow sin or sinners in His presence (Hab. 1:13) and our sin must be paid for with death (Rom. 6:23, Ezek. 18:20a). The mystery of the Old Testament is, “How can God forgive us so that we can escape paying for our sins?” (Job 9:2, Ps. 130:3, Is. 1:18). That question is answered when Jesus appeared and John the Baptist said, “This is the one who will make the payment that our sin requires.”

During this final Quarter, recognize that the mystery of the Old Testament is still a mystery to so many around us. Friends, coworkers, classmates, and strangers still face the question, “How will I escape paying for my sins?” As Christians, we have the amazing privilege to be like John the Baptist and point out Christ to them and say, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Out of love for the lost and our Savior, let us be faithful to boldly act on that privilege.
